Why the Miami Grand Prix actually failed
Over the weekend all F1 fans around the world were anticipating and ready for the Miami grand prix. A new track with potential and possibilities. The media hype for this circuit was big, with alot of push to get eyes on this race.
The first problem is that the track is dull and boring. It is a another generic street track that offers little to no wheel to wheel racing due to it's narrow nature. This track was made and built mainly for F1 to have another race in America which helps to capture more of the American market. Which I have no problem with if the track is the first priority rather than the location. Miami was not selected because of the potential to build a good track, it was selected due to the fame and glamour of Miami. Which is a huge problem F1 faces, as it becomes more and more mainstream it is easy to lose focus of what the fans want great hard racing. This just wasn't the case at Miami.
The coverage had alot of glitz and glamour which seemed to be done to hide the fact that the track was not the best. Again the build up can be over the top if the track is there to back this up. However with Miami the track simply doesn't do that. It felt as if the race was of second importance compared to everything else, which is a huge shame as the race should be the number one priority. It has already been revealed that the track actually lost money for it's first race which is never a good sign.
I personally think F1 needs to move away from lacklustre, location driven circuits and have more of a emphasis on tracks that can provide amazing racing. This doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon with the Las Vegas grand prix set to hold it's first race in 2023. I have no problem with F1 increasing their presence in the USA however this shouldn't be at the detriment to racing. Unfortunately more tracks like Miami are likely to be built with traditional circuits becoming old news.
